JOB SEARCH ADVICE FOR MULTIMEDIA JOURNALISTS & PRODUCTION MAJORS
ABOUT THE PROJECT

Every semester as university students approach graduation, the reality of the job-hunt hits them right in the resume. Students start asking questions, the same questions semester after semester.

And sometimes you wonder why they ask. We’re the professors. And one thing professors learn is students don’t really believe you.

Professor David Smeltzer and I each spent more than a quarter century in the business before moving to the classroom. I worked TV & online news; Dave’s expertise is commercial/corporate video. But like I said, we’re now the doofs at the front of the class.

And let’s face it, this is one fast-changing industry. A couple years ago, you sent a tape, now it’s a DVD. Somemployers don’t want a DVD; they just want a link to your web site. And if you don’t have one, you’re not getting hired.

What skills are employers looking for, what should you put on your demo, how important is that cover letter? MediaJobPod is a place where students can click and get advice from top professionals in the field. We’ll be continually adding more comments from more people. If you’d like to contribute, let us know.

None of this would be online if it weren’t for the wonderful design work of KSU’s Liz Wyglendowski and the coding work of Yeounju Kim and the assistance of the Kent JMC tech crew, particularly Ben Marquis and Daniel White. Thank you to all of them.

If you want to use MediaJobPod as a feature on your site, please do. We’ve included artwork. To contact us, zap us an email: dsmeltze@kent.edu or kidsvoog@kent.edu
